May 2007

Well, I’m back! Sorry for not posting for so long.

A most unusual Duke Ellington record, two selections feature nine symphonic percussionists on tympani, vibes, marimbas and xylophones. Dizzy Gillespie makes a historic appearance with Ellington’s orchestra on “U.M.M.G.” (a meeting that should have been repeated often but sadly never was), Jimmy Rushing (Count Basie’s former vocalist) sings “Hello Little Girl” and both Johnny Hodges (“All of Me”) and Paul Gonsalves (“Ready Go!”) have chances to blow. This Columbia release was reissued in 1997 as a Mobile Fidelity audiophile CD.

sorry for the bad quality (it was the only one i could find)

These are two different genres, but stylistically share many characteristics. I’m too lazy to post a description, so I’ll just pick some of the best albums. Note: Most of the bands posted have albums that fall into both categories. (ie. Sublime, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Dance Hall Crashers, Less Than Jake)

I just got this album. It is awesome! I don’t normally like modern rap, but this is the best I’ve ever heard.

Okay, here we go.

The instrumental dexterity of this live St. Paul, MN-based rap group is considerable, to the point where overlooking the equally flexible MCing is almost a given. Though the album clocks in just short of an hour, it can seem more like 40 minutes, unless you consider unflinching amiability a handicap. At no point are they longwinded, and they keep the variations on their sound rolling throughout the closing track. Though the lines “We gets dirtier than woman’s mud wrestling between two diseased old lepers in a sexual fling/We can go off clean like Will Smith in a fight with Mr. Clean in a soap-filled boxing ring” are silly, they sum up the group’s attack quite fittingly. The prejudices against underground rap, conscious rap, and heart-on-sleeve rap will hopefully not prevent this group from being viewed as a considerable part of hip-hop history.

Not only is 1981’s Moving Pictures Rush’s best album, it is undeniably one of the greatest hard rock albums of all time. The new wave meets hard rock approach of Permanent Waves is honed to perfection — all seven of the tracks are classics (four are still featured regularly in concert and on classic rock radio). While other hard rock bands at the time experimented unsuccessfully with other musical styles, Rush were one of the few to successfully cross over. The whole entire first side is perfect — their most renowned song, “Tom Sawyer,” kicks things off, and is soon followed by the racing “Red Barchetta,” the instrumental “YYZ,” and a song that examines the pros and cons of stardom, “Limelight.” And while the second side isn’t as instantly striking as the first, it is ultimately rewarding. The long and winding “The Camera Eye” begins with a synth-driven piece before transforming into one of the band’s more straight-ahead epics, while “Witch Hunt” and “Vital Signs” remain two of the trio’s more underrated rock compositions. Rush proved with Moving Pictures that there was still uncharted territory to explore within the hard rock format, and were rewarded with their most enduring and popular album.
